A lot of people are investing in houses abroad at the moment. Another possibility is to invest in a second home in your own country, perhaps by the coast or in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
There are advantages and disadvantages in such a move. Good things: you'll know a huge amount about the home buying process and the whole system, the language is familiar, and there are no currency exchange costs. Bad things: it may all be too familiar, the prices are likely to be rather high in the UK for example.
