There are many techniques involved in solving Sudoku. You will easily work out the first couple of techniques for yourself, if you haven't done already.

Naked single or sole candidate

When a cell can only have one value, when considering all the other cells in the same block, row and column. By a process of elimination there are eight other integers in the rows, columns and same block - hence there is only one possibility for the square remaining.

Hidden single or unique candidate

When a particular cell can only take one value due to the fact that the particular integer appears in the neighbouring rows, columns of neighbouring blocks. It's more easily explained with an example.

Other techniques

All other techniques involve reducing the number of possibilities down to singles if at all possible. A description of many of the techniques can be found here .

However, think twice before jumping into this world of Sudoku techniques. There's more satisfaction in working them out for yourself, but perhaps we're just old-fashioned.
