Understandably people are very worried about climate change and the effect of lots of air travel on the amount of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere. One way to reduce carbon emissions is to cut out travelling! However, people generally do wish to travel around, either to work, through business or through holidays and leisure activities. One way to help put something back after travel is to offset the carbon dioxide used in the trip - so-called `carbon offsetting'. Usually trees are planted which will in time use up carbon dioxide that has been pumped into the air. On this page we give some links to carbon offsetting companies. Undoubtably the best way of reducing carbon dioxide is to reduce your carbon footprint. If one really does want to buy a house abroad (which many do!) then it's worth taking into account the amount of flight time you will use to get to the property. A place abroad which is a ferry trip, train trip or short drive away is better than a short haul flight (in terms of CO2 produced) which in turn is a lot better than a long haul flight. There are critics of the simple carbon offset approach, stating that it is just a convenient way of not feeling guilty. However, if one is to undertake flights and travel, then one can argue that it must be better than doing nothing.
